The 5 best campsites in the Peak District for families

The 5 Best Campsites in the Peak District for Families

If you close your eyes and drop a pin anywhere in the Peak District, chances are you’d land somewhere spectacular.

Hills, mountains, waterfalls, wide open spaces, pubs selling local beer, cafés serving family-recipe cakes passed down through generations… there’s so much to love about being in this area of the country, and we’re lucky enough to have it all on our doorstep!

Staycations have become more popular in recent years, and the Peaks has everything you’d want for a UK-based family break. There’s loads to explore, the walking’s some of the best in the country, and once you’ve spent the day outside, it makes sense to carry on soaking it all in — which is why camping’s such a great option. It’s affordable, flexible, and easy to pitch up to with muddy boots.

So if you’re planning a family break and fancy swapping hotel corridors for open skies, here are five brilliant Peak District campsites to have on your radar.

The Best Family Campsites in the Peak District (Our Top 5 Picks)

When you think of camping, you tend to think of the summer holidays or maybe a bank holiday weekend. But if you’re feeling especially hardy and fancy braving a Northern winter outdoors, some of these Peak District campsites are open year-round.

All five of these campsites offer something a bit different, but they’ve got one thing in common: they’re great for families who love being outdoors.

Please note that all the information gathered here is, to the best of our knowledge, correct at the time of writing. But please check the official website for each campsite for the most up-to-date travel and visitor information.

  • Location: Newfold Farm, Grindsbrook Booth, Edale, Hope Valley S33 7ZD
  • Type of Pitch(es) Available: Non-electric grass tent pitches, campervan pitches

Why We Love It

Newfold Farm sits right in the heart of the High Peak near Chapel-en-le-Frith — the capital of the Peak District, as my brother always calls it!

You’ve got those incredible views of the Great Ridge, and if you’re here in spring or summer, this is a perfect spot for kite flying as the open fields and Edale breeze practically guarantee lift-off.

Family-Friendly Features

  • Open grassy spaces perfect for ball games and kite flying
  • Quiet hours from 10pm help everyone get a better night’s sleep
  • Modern, state-of-the-art toilet and shower block — always a win when camping with kids!

  • Kinder Scout: A tougher hike if you’re travelling with teens or adventurous older kids.

Top Tip From Our Team

The on-site café’s great for lazy mornings, but if you want the full camping experience, it’s worth cooking over the fire at least once.

The Stanley Wildfare Core Full Serve Cookset (as seen below) keeps it easy, and you’ll have everything you need for bacon butties or a late-night hot chocolate under the stars.

Top-Tip From Our Team

You’re surrounded by open countryside here, and it can turn chilly as soon as the sun drops. So it’s worth packing a couple of fleeces or a comfy changing robe for the evenings. Even in summer, you’ll be glad of them when you’re sat out under those dark skies with a cup of tea in hand.

  • Lantern Pike: A rewarding climb with a 360-degree view across seven counties — perfect for older kids or a family challenge.
  • Kinder Scout: For adventurous families, this is the famous Peak District hike — expect dramatic views and a real sense of achievement at the top.

Top Tip From Our Team

The Pack Horse pub is a local favourite for a hearty meal after a day of exploring. Hayfield’s just down the road from us, so we’re often there ourselves enjoying a pint and a plate of something warm — and we always spot a few happy campers doing the same!
