A fishtail parka is defined by its longer split rear hem and utility styling; it may be uninsulated or only shower resistant. A padded parka adds synthetic or down-like insulation and is designed primarily for warmth. The same product can combine both features, so check filling and waterproof construction separately.

The zip should close smoothly over intended layers without pulling at the bust or opening across the hips. Sit down and raise the arms to test movement. If one area fits and another is tight, a shaped or two-way-zip style is often better than simply sizing up and creating oversized shoulders.

It provides excellent thigh coverage outdoors but can bunch beneath the body when seated. A two-way front zip or side vents allow the lower hem to open and improve comfort. Very stiff or heavily padded long coats are less convenient for frequent short journeys than mid-thigh styles.

Look for a stated waterproof membrane or rating, fully taped seams and protected front and pocket zips. A water-repellent finish or showerproof description only supports shorter, lighter exposure. Insulation, faux-fur trim and a long hem add warmth or coverage but do not prove the seams will resist sustained rain.

Use the size chart while wearing the thickest realistic mid-layer. There should be movement through the upper back and enough sleeve room without compressing insulation. Avoid adding more than the required layering allowance, because excess internal air and a loose hood can reduce wind comfort.
