A beach towel is the simplest and usually most versatile drying option. A towel poncho adds a hood and enclosed coverage so you can change underneath it. A waterproof changing robe adds a weather-resistant outer and insulating lining for wind and rain, but it is bulkier and not normally as absorbent as cotton towelling. Choose according to whether drying, privacy or weather protection matters most.

Cotton towelling feels familiar, absorbs well and is comfortable against skin, but it becomes heavy when wet and takes longer to dry. Quick-dry synthetic fabric packs smaller and is useful for travel, repeat surf sessions and campervan storage, though it may feel less plush. A woven cotton poncho is best for comfort; a lightweight quick-dry poncho is best when space and turnaround time matter.

It should be wide enough to bring your arms inside and remove swimwear without the hem riding up, while the length should maintain coverage when bending. Oversized does not mean one size works equally well for every height. Check the product dimensions, sleeve openings and intended adult or junior sizing, particularly if you want to change out of a wetsuit rather than simply dry off.

Smooth, tightly woven and low-loop fabrics tend to release dry sand more easily than deep terry loops. Quick-dry travel towels usually shake clean most easily, while thick cotton towels prioritise softness and absorbency. Whatever the material, let sand dry before shaking the towel and avoid rubbing wet sand deeper into the pile.

Yes for drying and privacy, but a towel poncho alone does not block wind or rain like a weatherproof robe. Dry quickly, add warm layers and use a windproof outer if conditions are cold. For repeated winter swims or exposed beaches, many swimmers combine an absorbent poncho or towel with a waterproof insulated robe rather than expecting one garment to perform both jobs perfectly.
