A crew neck is the most versatile over a T-shirt or Oxford shirt. A V-neck shows more of a shirt and tie but can feel dated when cut too deep. A quarter zip adds structure and temperature control, while a roll neck creates the smartest cold-weather silhouette. Choose the neckline around the layers already in your wardrobe.

Merino is fine, breathable and low bulk; lambswool is loftier and warmer but may feel coarser. Cotton is comfortable indoors and in transitional weather but is heavier when damp. Acrylic is easy-care and affordable, though quality and pilling resistance vary. Blends aim to balance softness, shape retention, warmth and price.

Gauge describes knit density and needle spacing. Fine-gauge garments are smoother, lighter and easier beneath a blazer or coat, while chunky lower-gauge knits trap more air and create a casual winter texture. Gauge is not a direct quality score; fibre, finishing and construction determine how the garment performs.

The shoulders should align, the armholes must accommodate the shirt sleeves and the body should skim rather than stretch across buttons. A fine-gauge knit needs less extra room than a chunky style. Check that the shirt collar remains upright and that the jumper hem does not ride up when reaching forward.

Fold jumpers rather than hanging heavy or soft knits, which can stretch at the shoulders. Wash only when needed, follow the fibre-specific label and dry flat after reshaping. Remove pills gently with a suitable comb or fabric shaver; pulling them by hand can damage surrounding fibres.
