Pyjamas are designed primarily for sleep, using seams, fastenings and fabrics intended for bed. Loungewear may be heavier, more structured or styled for daytime wear at home. Some sets cross both roles, but check bulky hoods, zips and decorative trims if comfort during sleep is the priority.

Cotton is breathable and suits people who sleep warm or prefer year-round softness, though it holds moisture and dries slowly. Fleece and plush fabrics trap more heat and work well for cold evenings, but can cause overheating in bed. Choose the fabric for the room temperature and whether the garment is for sleeping or relaxing.

It should wrap fully without pulling at the hips, with sleeves that stay clear of the hands and a belt positioned at the natural waist. A thick gown needs enough room over winter pyjamas but should not trail on stairs. Use garment length and chest measurements rather than relying only on dress size.

Use a known clothing size as a starting point, then favour a relaxed cut with an adjustable waist when exact measurements are unavailable. Check the retailer's current returns terms and avoid close-fitting leggings or fitted tops unless the recipient's measurements are known. Fabric stretch also affects forgiveness.

Follow the fibre-specific label, wash with similar soft fabrics and avoid excessive detergent and heat. Fabric conditioner may reduce absorbency or affect specialist finishes, while high tumble heat can shrink cotton and flatten plush pile. Reshape garments and close zips before washing.
