Elastic-waist swim shorts are quicker to change, easier for younger children to manage and more forgiving as the waist changes. Boardshorts use a flatter, more secure waistband that suits surfing and active beach play, but the child must be able to fasten it comfortably. Choose independence and pool convenience versus security for energetic water use.

They should stay secure during jumping and swimming without a drawcord being tied excessively tight. Leave enough room through the seat and thigh for movement, but avoid a loose waistband because water adds drag. Test the drawcord or adjusters before swimming and never rely on a decorative cord that does not tighten the waist.

A soft liner can provide support and modesty in loose styles, but seams or coarse mesh may rub during long beach days. Boardshorts often omit the liner. If a child finds one uncomfortable, choose a smoother-lined or unlined design rather than cutting the liner out and potentially changing coverage or fit.

Only the covered fabric area provides any protection, and a product should state a UPF rating before one is assumed. Most shorts leave much of the legs exposed. Use shade, suitable sunscreen and a UPF rash vest or longer swim garment as part of a wider sun-safety routine.

Rinse them promptly after chlorine or saltwater, then wash according to the label and dry away from strong direct heat. Do not leave wet swimwear rolled in a towel or bag. Chlorine, sunscreen and rough pool surfaces gradually affect fabric, so rotate pairs if they are used frequently.
