Tent mules let feet recover from structured footwear, are quick to step into and provide insulation from cold ground. Their tougher sole handles short campsite trips better than socks or indoor slippers. They are a comfort and convenience item, not a substitute for boots on uneven, wet or long routes.

They can be when the pack size and weight justify the comfort, particularly on cold multi-day trips. Lightweight synthetic models compress more easily and retain warmth better when damp than many natural fills. Ultralight walkers may prefer sandals or thick socks, while car campers can prioritise a thicker sole and greater insulation.

It allows the shoe to be worn as a backless slip-on for quick tent entry, then raised for a more secure fit around camp. Only fold a heel designed for this purpose; repeatedly crushing a structured heel can weaken it. The raised position should hold without rubbing the Achilles area.

They are suitable for very short, dry trips when the outsole has adequate grip, but they lack the support, weather sealing and secure fastening of outdoor shoes. Wet grass can soak the upper even when the sole is waterproof. Use proper footwear for distance, darkness, uneven ground or persistent rain.

Remove loose dirt, open the heel and tongue area and let them dry in moving air away from direct heat. Do not pack them into a storage bag until the insulation and footbed are fully dry. High heat can damage synthetic insulation, adhesives and water-resistant finishes.
