A jacket is better when wind or rain reaches the arms or when standing still for long periods. A gilet is most versatile when it fits beneath a shell without compressing its insulation.

The armholes should allow the underlayer to move without cutting into the armpit, while the chest should zip comfortably without flattening thick insulation. Excess width creates cold gaps and bunching under a coat. Try the gilet with the layer you actually plan to wear rather than automatically sizing up.

Most are water resistant at best unless the product explicitly states a waterproof fabric and taped seams. Stitching through quilted baffles creates potential water-entry points, so a padded gilet is usually for cold, light-showery weather. Add a waterproof shell for sustained rain rather than relying on the filling or shiny outer.
