A ski jacket is usually designed around repeated movement and snow exposure, with features such as a powder skirt, ski-pass pocket, adjustable cuffs, ventilation and a hood shaped for slope use. An everyday waterproof may keep rain out but lack snow sealing and storage. Check the individual model, because not every jacket labelled winter or padded is ski specific.

An insulated jacket is simple and warm for resort skiing, especially if you run cold or take frequent breaks. A shell gives greater control because base and midlayers can be changed with the temperature and effort. Choose a shell for variable conditions and active skiing; choose insulation when convenience and dependable warmth matter more than maximum flexibility.

It should close over your intended midlayer without pulling at the hips, chest or upper back. Lift both arms and rotate as if planting poles; the hem should not rise excessively and the cuffs should still meet the gloves. A shaped waist is fine, but a fashion-tight fit can compress insulation and restrict movement.

Prioritise waterproof construction, seam sealing, a secure hood, glove-compatible cuffs and a hem or powder skirt that limits snow entry. Pit zips or other ventilation matter for active skiers, while insulated pockets and a pass pocket add convenience. Decorative fur trims and extra pockets are secondary if the core weather protection is weak.

The useful level depends on snowfall, wet chairlifts, trip length and how often you fall or sit in snow. Moderate ratings can work in cold dry conditions, while wetter European resort days benefit from higher-rated fabric and taped seams. Compare breathability as well: a very waterproof jacket can still feel clammy if moisture cannot escape.
