Choose padded for warmth during lower-intensity walks, commuting or standing outdoors; fleece for breathable mid-layer warmth; and softshell for wind resistance and freedom of movement during active use. A hybrid gilet combines insulated front panels with stretchier side or back sections, which can be a useful compromise for walking and work where overheating is a concern.

Packaway models use lightweight, compressible insulation and fabrics so they can be carried in a bag and added when temperatures drop. They are convenient for travel and changeable days, but generally feel less substantial than heavyweight or longline styles. Check whether the product is designed to pack into its own pocket and whether it prioritises warmth, quick drying or both.

Softshell gilets are primarily wind resistant, flexible and water repellent rather than substitutes for a fully waterproof shell. They protect the torso from brief showers while leaving the arms unrestricted, but exposed hill walks still require a waterproof jacket in the pack. Look for explicit waterproof wording and seam construction if sustained rain protection is essential.

A longline gilet extends warmth over the hips and upper thighs and works well for school runs, dog walks and casual winter layering. It is less compact and can restrict a long stride more than a hip-length walking gilet. Check two-way zips or side openings if you plan to drive, cycle or walk quickly in a longer style.

The armholes should sit close enough to limit draughts but not pull into the underarm when a mid-layer is worn. Zip the gilet over the thickest layer you expect to use and reach forward to check shoulder movement. For technical walking, avoid excessive loose fabric; for casual layering, a little extra room through the chest and hem is useful.
