Ankle wellies are easiest for gardening, festivals and quick dog walks. Mid-height boots balance coverage and movement, while tall wellies protect more of the calf in mud, long grass and shallow water. Taller is not always better: check calf circumference, car driving comfort and how often the boot must be removed.

There should be room for trousers and socks without the top cutting in, while the shaft should not gape so widely that debris enters.
