FAQs about Pumpkin Picking

What do you wear pumpkin picking?

You’ll be active and on your feet so think about comfy outdoor clothing you don’t mind getting a bit muddy.

Leggings or old jeans, a fleece, waterproof jacket, and your wellies are usually a good combo. We'd also recommend rainsuits for the little ones, as it just makes life easier!

Plus, bring something to transport your pumpkin home in, like a tote bag or reusable shopping bag. Two children wearing the Regatta Puddle IV Puddlesuit

What can you do with your pumpkin?

So you’ve enjoyed your family day out and now you’ve got a couple of pumpkins in the car to take home. What’s next?

Luckily, there’s lots to do with pumpkins:

  • Carve it: A classic Halloween activity for a reason. You can have so much fun with this
  • Cook with it: Roasted pumpkin soups, curries, and pies for tea for the foreseeable!  Pumpkin puree is also great for muffins or pancakes
  • Use it as decor: Make your home an Instagram-worthy autumn-themed display with the pumpkin centre stage
  • Toast the seeds: These make for a crunchy snack or they go great in salads. Toss in a little oil and seasoning, then roast in the oven or air fryer
  • Paint it: Another fun family activity to do. Acrylic paints are usually a good shout for painting pumpkins

How to store it: Keep your pumpkin somewhere cool and dry: a garage, porch, or unheated room works well. Avoid leaving it on damp ground, and handle it gently so the skin stays intact. Stored this way, an uncarved pumpkin can last for weeks.

Tip: If you’re carving, wait until a day or two before Halloween so it stays fresh for the big night.

Do you have to book pumpkin picking in advance?

Some places do require tickets, others are happy for you to show up on the day. We’ve put as much info as we can find here on our guide, but we always recommend checking with the site directly to confirm.

When is the best time to go pumpkin picking?

It all depends on your family! We know nap-times and kids’ routines may make certain times of the day difficult, so try not to get too focused on the perfect time to go.

But if you’re flexible or concerned about busyness, first thing in the morning will probably see you beat some of the crowd. It’s also getting to the time of year when it gets dark earlier, so if you want your photos to be bright, head as early as you can.

Can I go pumpkin picking if it’s raining?

Most pumpkin patches will still be open if it’s raining. They are farmers, so are used to all kinds of weather!

Check the terms of your ticket to see if it’s refundable or changeable based on rain, if you don’t fancy still going when it’s raining. Or you could embrace the British weather and get into your waterproofs and wellies. For the kids, we’d suggest kitting them out in a puddlesuit if it’s raining heavily.

Can you eat the pumpkins from a pumpkin patch?

Yes, provided it’s an edible pumpkin! Some pumpkins are just for decorative purposes. If you’re not sure, ask at the place.
