It combines a waterproof outer shell with a removable fleece or insulated inner. Wear both in cold wet weather, the shell alone in mild rain and the inner alone in dry cool conditions. The connection system keeps the layers aligned but does not change the separate function of each component.

It can be warm with both layers fitted, but warmth depends on the inner layer's material and weight. Its main advantage is versatility rather than maximum insulation. A heavy padded parka may be warmer when standing still, while the 3-in-1 system is easier to adapt during walking and changing temperatures.

You can wear another midlayer beneath the shell, but it may not zip into the dedicated attachment points. Check room, zip compatibility and sleeve binding. The shell should still function independently, so a favourite separate fleece can work even if the original inner is left at home.

Test the full system, not only the shell. Reach forward, raise the arms and turn the head with the hood up. The inner should not bunch at the cuffs or pull across the back. A shell that appears roomy on its own may become restrictive once the attached fleece occupies the space.

Separate them and follow each care label. The waterproof shell may need technical detergent and water-repellent maintenance, while the fleece has different washing needs. Closing attachment zips and washing the complete system together can create uneven cleaning, extra abrasion and slow drying.
