Check the fibre composition rather than judging the picture. Cotton-rich and smooth acrylic knits are often easier against sensitive skin than coarse wool or metallic novelty yarns. A thin cotton T-shirt underneath also creates a barrier without adding much bulk; avoid sizing down if you plan to layer.

Choose a restrained motif, conventional crew neck and two or three colours rather than flashing lights, bulky appliqué or large slogans. A finer knit sits more neatly with chinos or dark jeans and under a coat. The more three-dimensional the decoration, the harder the jumper is to layer and wash.

Only when the cut is slim or you want room for a shirt underneath. Many festive jumpers already have a relaxed shape, and oversizing can make shoulder seams and motifs sit badly. Use chest measurements and intended-fit notes, because seasonal designs from different brands do not share one standard block.

Treat the decoration as the limiting factor. Turn the jumper inside out, use a laundry bag and a cool delicate cycle only when the care label allows; otherwise hand wash or spot clean. Do not tumble-dry raised decorations, and dry knitwear flat so the weight does not stretch the body.

Wash or air it fully before storage, make sure it is completely dry and fold it rather than hanging it. Store it in a breathable bag or clean lidded box away from damp and direct sunlight. For wool-containing styles, add moth protection and inspect the jumper before the next festive season.
