Slim jeans are close through the thigh and leg, tapered jeans narrow more noticeably from knee to ankle, and straight jeans keep a more consistent width. Product naming can vary, so compare thigh, knee and hem measurements where available. Stretch content also changes how a cut feels in motion.

It should feel secure without pressure, numbness or pulling at the pockets. A small elastane content allows movement and may relax slightly during wear, but it will not correct a waistband or thigh that is clearly too small. Measure the waist where the jeans will sit, the fullest seat and the inside leg from crotch to desired hem.
