Boardshorts use a fixed or performance waistband to stay secure during surfing and usually avoid a built-in brief. Elastic-waist swim shorts are quicker to change into, more forgiving around the waist and convenient for pools and holidays. Choose boardshorts for active water use; choose volley-style shorts for general swimming and all-day comfort.

A mesh brief provides support and modesty in loose elastic-waist swim shorts. Performance boardshorts usually omit it to reduce friction, water retention and bunching while paddling. If a liner rubs, do not cut it out until you know the outer fabric remains secure and comfortable; a separate swim brief or compression liner may work better.

Longer 19- to 21-inch outseams give more thigh coverage and reduce contact with the board, while shorter volley styles feel freer for casual swimming and sunbathing. The number describes the garment outseam, so the same length lands differently according to height. For surfing, waistband security and stretch matter more than fashion length alone.

Many elastic-waist and hybrid styles can move from beach to café once dry, especially when they include useful pockets and a subdued print. Traditional boardshorts may lack secure everyday storage, and a wet mesh liner can feel uncomfortable. Rinse off salt or chlorine before wearing them repeatedly as casual shorts.

It should remain secure through swimming, duck-diving and sitting without cutting into the abdomen. A fixed waistband needs enough adjustment at the drawcord to resist being pulled down by water. If it closes only at the loosest point or wrinkles heavily when tightened, try another waist size or a different waistband construction.
