Choose shoes for lighter loads, warmer weather and frequent mixed urban-to-trail use. Choose boots when mud, wet grass, loose stones or ankle-deep puddles are likely. A waterproof shoe can still let water enter over the collar, while a boot can feel hotter and heavier, so the best year-round option depends on route conditions rather than season alone.

The heel should stay secure and the toes should not touch the front when weight moves forward. Try footwear with your intended socks, lace it from the heel back and walk down an incline if possible. Leave useful toe room, but avoid excess volume that lets the foot slide; that movement causes more rubbing than a correctly fitted snug heel.

Modern synthetic and fabric boots should feel broadly comfortable from the start, though the upper and footbed may soften over several short walks. Leather styles can take longer to flex. Do not rely on breaking-in to cure toe pressure, numbness or major heel lift; those usually indicate the wrong size, width or last.
