Choose a closed-toe model such as a Westshore-style hybrid for rocky paths, campsites and family days where toes may be knocked. An open sandal is cooler and sheds sand more easily on pavements, beaches and gentle trails. Closed toes add protection but can hold grit, so the best choice depends on terrain rather than temperature alone.

Some synthetic, quick-drying models are suitable for paddling and stream crossings, but not every sandal is designed for repeated saltwater immersion. Check the upper, footbed and fastening specification, then rinse off salt and sand and dry naturally. A leather-led sandal should be treated as a walking shoe, not a water shoe.

For pavements and holiday sightseeing, a flexible patterned sole is usually enough. Muddy paths, wet rock and uneven trails need deeper lugs, a secure heel strap and a footbed that prevents sliding when damp. Sandals remain less protective than walking shoes, so use boots or shoes for steep, loose or exposed ground.

They should hold the heel and midfoot without pinching, while leaving a small margin around the toes. Adjustable straps can settle after a few wears, but pressure points normally become worse rather than disappearing. Try them with the feet slightly warm or swollen, as they may be on a summer walk.

Walking sandals are built around a more secure fastening, shaped footbed and grippier outsole, allowing the foot to remain stable over repeated steps. Beach sandals prioritise simplicity and quick on-off use. If the day involves miles of sightseeing, uneven paths or carrying a bag, the walking construction is the more reliable option.
