The visible knit is only the outer layer. Waterproof models place a membrane between the knit and an inner lining, creating a three-layer structure that blocks rain while retaining a conventional beanie appearance. The internal membrane cannot stretch as freely as a single knitted layer, so the hat feels more structured and may fit closer. That is a normal trade-off for waterproofing, not necessarily a sizing fault. Measure the head and use the stated size rather than assuming one universal beanie fit.

A breathable membrane allows some moisture vapour to escape, but it will usually feel warmer and less airy than an open knit. It suits cold rain, exposed walks and low-to-moderate activity. For hard running in dry weather, a lightweight wicking cap or simple beanie may regulate heat better.

The beanie moves naturally with the head, keeps the ears covered and avoids the restricted hearing or peripheral vision of some hoods. A hood still protects the neck and prevents water running inside the collar. In severe rain, using both often provides the most complete coverage.

Follow the product care label, reshape it and air-dry away from direct heat. Turn or open the hat so moisture can escape from both the lining and outer knit. Do not wring, iron or place it on a radiator, as high heat and twisting can damage the waterproof laminate.
