Compare the exact waterproof and breathability figures, seam construction, face fabric and weight instead of assuming the membrane name decides everything.

It works well for commuting, dog walks and low-level trails, but the longer hem may sit beneath a rucksack hip belt and reduce stride on steep ground. A shorter shell is usually better for sustained hiking. Look for a two-way zip or rear vent if you want coverage without restricting movement.

A figure around 10,000mm or above is generally capable of typical sustained UK rain when seams and closures are properly constructed. Higher figures provide more margin for prolonged exposure and pressure from straps. The hood, cuffs and front zip can still determine comfort even when the fabric rating is strong.

The durable water-repellent finish on the outer fabric can wear or become contaminated, causing the face material to wet out. The membrane may remain waterproof, but breathability and comfort decline. Clean the jacket with suitable technical wash and restore repellency according to Berghaus’s care instructions.

Avoid it unless the individual care label explicitly permits it. Softener can leave residues that interfere with water repellency and moisture transfer. Close fastenings, use a technical or mild detergent as directed and follow the specified wash and reproofing process for that exact jacket.
