Feather Free uses soft synthetic fibres designed to mimic down's loft and warmth-to-weight. Warmloft is a compressible synthetic down-touch insulation with quick-drying, water-repellent fibres. Thermoguard uses high-loft synthetic sheet insulation. The warmest jacket depends on fill weight, baffle design, length and fit as well as the technology name.

A long coat covers the hips and thighs and is useful for commuting, sidelines and low-activity cold. A short puffer is lighter, easier for driving and offers more freedom during walking. Longer designs can feel restrictive if the zip and hem lack movement features, so test stride and sitting comfort.

Many are water repellent, allowing light rain to bead from the surface, but that is not the same as a waterproof membrane with sealed seams. Some products combine insulation with full waterproofing, so look for an explicit rating and taped-seam statement. Use a shell in sustained rain when the jacket is only water repellent.

It should close over normal layers without pulling across the bust, shoulders or hips. Excessively tight areas flatten loft and can reduce warmth, while too much space allows cold air movement. Check sleeve reach, hood position and hem coverage while sitting and raising the arms.

Follow the label, close fastenings and use the recommended gentle cycle. Dry thoroughly at the permitted temperature, periodically loosening clumps by hand; some garments allow low tumble drying. Do not store the jacket compressed while damp, and avoid fabric conditioner unless the care instructions permit it.
