A swimsuit gives continuous coverage and is convenient for swimming. A tankini offers similar torso coverage with easier separates and flexible sizing between top and bottom. A bikini is cooler and allows more movement for sunbathing. For active swimming, prioritise secure straps and leg openings; for holidays, adjustability and personal coverage may matter more.

It usually refers to a supportive front panel, lining or fabric structure that smooths the midsection. It does not change the garment size and should not feel restrictive when breathing or sitting. Check whether control is described as light, medium or firm and make sure the suit still lies flat at the leg and bust rather than sizing down for more compression.

Reversible pieces provide two print or colour options in one garment, with seams and labels designed to work on either side. Check whether cups, fastenings and straps remain adjustable when reversed. The benefit is packing versatility, but rinse and dry the piece thoroughly because both fabric faces are exposed to chlorine, salt and sunscreen.

A new swimsuit should feel secure and close fitting when dry because many fabrics relax slightly in water, but it should not cut into the shoulders, restrict breathing or create numbness. Move, sit and raise your arms during the fit check. If the bust or torso length is wrong, changing style may work better than simply changing size.

Some pieces are suitable for relaxed paddling, but a standard swimsuit does not provide the sun coverage, abrasion control or secure fit of a rash vest or surf suit. For active board sports, consider long sleeves, UPF-rated fabric and closures that stay secure after a fall. In cold water, add appropriate neoprene rather than relying on ordinary swimwear for warmth.
