Amphibian shorts are designed to bridge land and water: they use quicker-drying stretch fabric and boardshort-influenced construction while retaining the cleaner look and pockets of a chino. They are useful for travel, paddleboarding and days that move between beach and town. Standard cotton chinos feel more natural for everyday wear but dry much more slowly.

It usually refers to the outseam—the distance from the top of the waistband to the hem—not the inside leg. On an average-height wearer, 18-inch shorts sit higher above the knee, while 20-inch styles generally reach closer to it. Body height and rise alter the result, so compare the garment measurements rather than treating the number as a universal knee position.

Cargo shorts offer more storage and work well for sightseeing or outdoor days, but loaded thigh pockets can feel bulky and distort the fit. Chino walkshorts pack flatter, look smarter and are easier to wear in restaurants or cities. For secure travel storage, check whether the chosen style has a zipped pocket rather than relying only on pocket count.

They are comfortable for relaxed wear, but fleece or heavier jersey traps more heat and moisture than woven chino or Amphibian fabric. Choose sweat shorts for evenings, travel and low-intensity days; choose a lightweight woven style for sustained heat, walking or humid conditions. A loose fit cannot fully compensate for a heavy fabric.

The waistband should stay in place without a belt when the pockets are empty, and the thigh should allow a full stride without pulling across the seat. Slim styles should skim rather than grip. If the waist fits but the thigh is tight, changing to a roomier cut is usually better than sizing up and creating excess waistband space.
