Start with a comfortable base layer, add a fleece for adjustable warmth and use a waterproof shell to block wind and rain. A heavily padded coat is useful for low-activity cold days but can cause overheating during running or hiking. Separating layers makes temperature changes easier to manage.

For school, prioritise durability, easy fastenings, washable fabrics, secure pockets and compatibility with a backpack. For hiking or prolonged rain, focus on waterproof rating, taped seams, hood adjustment and breathability.
